Dangers of Smoking

The dangers of smoking are too numerous to list here. Smoking can increase the risk of developing several forms of cancer, including cancer of the throat, lung, stomach, or larynx. Dangers of smoking can also include developing emphysema or bronchitis.

Cancer and Medical Conditions from Smoking

Besides the many cancerous and/or medical conditions that are exacerbated or independently produced from smoking, there are symptoms that result from smoking that cause incredible discomfort to a person. The dangers of smoking can include the loss of the ability to breathe normally and not being able to exert yourself because taking a large breathe is just not possible. Shortness of breathe and general issues with breathing are most likely caused by the toxins a smokers inhales with every cigarette.

Dangers of smoking can also include chronic pain in different parts of the body such as the throat, legs, back and chest, and these symptoms never seem to dissipate. The real danger with these symptoms involves the cause of them. They could mean that cancerous cells have formed and have begun to grow further and even may have spread to other areas of your body.

Using sources such as the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, and American Lung Association you will learn that one of the dangers of smoking is the fact that the cigarettes contain nicotine, which is an addictive substance.

There are also more than 60 different chemicals in cigarettes that contribute to the development of cancer. Smoking will also raise your blood pressure and decrease the circulation of oxygen to the brain. Smoking can also contribute to disorders such as strokes or osteoporosis.

Low-Tar Cigarettes Safer?

There is also a common and dangerous myth in existence that says low-tar cigarettes are less dangerous than regular cigarettes. This is simply not true, as any smoking and inhaling of toxins will cause the various medical conditions previously mentioned. Actually, there is research that shows smokers that choose "light" cigarettes have an even higher potential risk of developing lung cancer. This is because smokers think that "light" is healthier so they inhale deeper, more often and hold the toxins in longer. They also do this to inhale the nicotine they are craving, as nicotine levels are lower in "lights."

Another common and dangerous myth is that water pipes like a hookah mitigate the dangers of "traditional" smoking, and this is also completely untrue. Just because the toxins are filtered through water doesn't mean that all the toxins are removed. In fact, many times the toxic levels remain at a dangerously high level in these water pipes.
